Public Speaking Prelude Seminar

Public speaking is basically the art of delivering a speech to a relatively larger audience. As a prelude to HND defense of some beneficiaries of the UNIPEDEV educational support scheme(UNIBETA), level 300 students as well some academic staff, received capacity building in the form of a public speaking seminar where they were thought on the particular nature of expression in the place of excelling not just as a student but as a person in the community.

The objectives of this seminar were to enlighten students on public speaking, expose errors of speaking, how to prepare for speaking, presentation as a public speaker, ethics of speaking, and of course how to become an efficient communicator.

Common mistakes in Public speaking.

some common mistakes include: lack of preparation, not knowing your audience, speaking too fast or to slow, lack of eye contact with audience, reading directly from notes, lack of vocal variety and failure to engage audience.

In order to avoid these mistakes: students were encouraged to know their audience, practice their speech before time, research on their topic, practice to effectively communicate in time, stay calm and focused, dress appropriately, arrive early and get familiar with the environment and above all, mentally visualize a successful presentation.

Public speaking as an asset to educational excellence cannot be overemphasized. UNIPEDEV is not only particular about educating students but ensuring that by proper education, they stand out eloquently in speech, representing themselves on all platforms as worthy communicators. The Emphasis of being able to speak with all eloquence as a public speaker is to have the ability to present ideas on all platforms…proper communication speaks better that a bucket of skills.
